Iponri trooped out to scoop petrol which spilled on the road and into drainages
after a tanker loaded with Premium Motor
Spirit (PMS) fell and spilt while ascending the bridge
Lagos State Fire Services on Tuesday afternoon averted a calamity after a disaster controlling the content preventing an explosion around 2pm at Costain, Iponri Lagos state.
The Nation reports that
before the tanker fell, it rolled backwards and hit a saloon car.
To prevent an explosion, firemen who immediately raced to the scene cordoned off all access roads and started blanketing the PMS.
They also sent
messages across the neighbourhood urging people to avoid lighting naked fires
or doing anything that could cause an inferno.
Reacting to the incident,
Director, Lagos Fire Service, Mrs. Margaret Adeseye, urged the public to avoid
combustible materials without the vicinity to prevent secondary incident.
Permanent Secretary (PS), Dr.
Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, said transloading of the product to another tanker was
ongoing, urging the public to avoid the area and refrain from scooping of
products.
“Residents should avoid
lighting any naked flame until the situation has been fully contained. The
sgency’s Supermetro is enroute to complete the operation,” he said.
