Nigeria House of Representatives made the call to discard multiple police checkpoints on roads linking Lagos-Abuja and South-East at the seating on Thursday.
The decision follows the unopposed motion moved by the House member representing Idemili-North/Idemili-South Federal Constituency in Anambra State.
Speaking on the reasons The Lawmakers said, “it is to facilitate free flow of traffic, relieve the pains and hardship of the motorist and other road users travelling to and from the South-East region, especially during this festive period.”
Punch News gathered that the House had ordered “immediate removal of all the checkpoints at Head Bridge”, and also call for deployment of enough Federal Road Safety Corps, on Asaba- Onitsha highway to ensure free movement of people during this festive period.
“Avoid dissipation of resources as exemplified by the multiple checkpoints on the roads, especially those leading to and from the South-East region.” The House told the security agencies.
The House Urged the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing, and the Federal Road Maintenance Agency to do their work by “removing all abandoned stopgap roadblocks used as checkpoints from the highways to allow free flow of traffic on these roads.”
In addition, the FRSC was pleaded with to make provision for ambulances at the appreciate places along the roads, to make first aid available to any accident victims and also to convey them to the nearest hospital. Since the roads will be busy during this festive period.
