The prime minister of Iraqi Mustafa al-kadhimi had just escaped a drone strike on his residence, in an event that had caused serious tension on the capital, Baghdad. The incident happened in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The PM said in a video released to the media by his office on Sunday morning, where he was discussing the attack with his top security officers.
Al-kadhimi said “the cowardly terrorist attack that targeted the home of the prime minister last night to assassinate him is a serious incident targeting the Iraqi state by criminal armed groups”.
The Reuters media had gathered that, not less than six security personnel protesting the prime minister, got wounded as a rest of the attack.
It was reported that security forces successfully shut down to drones in the area, while the third drone hits the Prime Minister’s residence in Baghdad’s Green Zone, where the government house and foreign embassies are located. The spokesperson to the Interior Minister, Saad Maan said in an interview with the state television Al-Iraqiya
Aljazeera has it that, al-Kadhimi through his office said “we will pursue this who committed yesterday’s crime, we know them well and we will expose them.
Al-kadhimi had also pleaded for “calm and restrain” within the state, in a Tweet on Sunday.
Barham Salih, the president of Iraq, called for unity among the Iraqis, to fight against what he called “the evildoers” targeting the security of the country.
Salih had condemned the attack in a Tweet post, calling it a “terrorist aggression and a heinous crime against the people of Iraq".
The attack came after a protest that took place in the Iraqi capital, two days earlier, claiming at least a life. Because of live ammunition used by the security agencies.
The protest was because of October 10 general election, where a well armed Iran-sponsored group leading the protest. Alleged of several electoral irregularities during the election, leading to the groups’ loss of its parliamentary power.
The leader of one of the militia faction, had come out to blame al-kadhimi for the death of the protesters.
At the funeral of the protesters, Qais al-Khazali, leader of the Asaib Ahl al-Haq militia wing, said “the blood of martyrs will hold you accountable”.
Al-Khazali further said “the protester only has one demand against fraud in elections. Responding like this means you (Prime Minister) are the first responsible for this fraud”.
Till the moment the Newspeddlers gathered this news, no group had claimed the responsibility for the attack.
